   Medem belongs to the generation of Basque filmmakers which made a forceful début in the early 1990s and brought Basque cinema to the forefront of the Spanish international market. Eschewing a nation-building agenda, his films explore the parameters of a plural cultural identity and tradition in ways that are both innovative and self-confident. If Vacas (Cows) (1992) offers a dissection of the rural saga film, La ardilla roja (The Red Squirrel) (1993) awarded the Youth Prize in the Directors" Fortnight in Cannes, adopts different generic conventions to reflect on issues of identity and memory. The stunning camera work in Tierra (Earth) (1996) confirms Medem's talent for creating a haunting atmosphere in film. The formal accomplishment of his filmmaking, together with a suggestive symbolism and complex narrative style, single out Medem as a representative of the new European cinema.
